Too bad for the cows!
galilaeus where do you call "home"? my knowledge of such practices in Germany are scarce, i.e. I don't really know. Noone except a few people close to that industry knows. Personally I doubt that things are similar to your ways, though many years ago, I expect it was like that. Today all animals get a computer chip inserted under the skin at birth and may not even have any visible tags at all. Scanners and portable computers everywhere -- except my exceptional last/single old farmer (and a few like him, few and far between)...
sorry, galilaeus, for not having asked my question clearly enough: I meant to inquire which country/place you are at "home" at, or rather those farmers you had mentioned (because you had asked "is it the same in Germany?"). I know very little about cows in Germany, nor anywhere else, really... my interest has been limited pretty much to "steaks on a grill" and related matters. This milk cow business is just "a blast from the past", encountering the same situation of 50 years ago, when I also went to fetch milk at the source most every evening...
I guess it all depends on how many animals one has and if they are kept "close" -- i.e. living "with" the family.
One always names the horse one rides, but in a stud farm, each animal surely also gets a chip and thus a number. We all get a social security number, passport number, driver's license number -- even Microsoft assigns us a number for using their software. It's all perfectly acceptable and sensible...
She is a very fine beast Wurmer..I suppose by now the owner will no longer be milking her..she may be already beef-burgers...But we know that this is NOT the cloned cow..
I wonder what happened to galilaeus..It is some time since I saw mention of his name..perhaps he himself was a victim of copyright infringement ;>)
now you made me curious, Jim, so I checked my mail: I last heard from galilaeus in mid-December 2009... I have no idea why his account has disappeared, but I'll snoop around a little for any indications as to what might be the cause (doubt that I find any though, otherwise will let you know)

she did more, galilaeus, she talked to me! said "Moooh" -- twice, at least...
She is pretty! I hope she can go out from time to time. Is she your cow or did you rent her? :)
