I was kidding you, the towers were built like that to make sure there was enough space for rain water to flow out of the plaza before it over-flooded the area.

In the colonial period this place was known as the swamp due to the floods, they even had to make a whole in one of the walls of the square for the water to scape, it is known today as "El chorro" (the stream).

Near the cathedral there is a road we call "Canal del Chorro" , it was the original canal to bring water to the city from the Almendares river, and the hole the made on the wall was to relieve the accumulated water into that canal.
