Skíðaskálinn í Hveradölum

Just 30 km away from Reykjavík going east is this beautiful skiing lodge "Skíðaskálinn" in Hveradalir "Hot-spring valley" and the first geothermal area you will encounter when driving east of Reykjavík. I absolutely love Skíðaskálinn. It was built in 1935 and when I was little it was run by my first-cousin´s grandmother and her brother so we spent a lot of time there, happy times :D There I skied in winter. There is a geothermal area by Skíðaskálinn and this is one of the most active geothermal areas in Iceland. You will notice it when you get close to it as you will see a lot of white hot steam coming from the ground. Close by is the power plant Hellisheiðivirkjun, which is open to visitors.Skíðaskálinn itself is a very lovely place.
