A folly built for Henry Hoare of the Stourhead Estate in 1762 and stands near the location of Egbert's Stone, where it is believed Alfred the Great, King of Wessex, rallied the Saxons in 878. It is in the parish of Brewham, Somerset but I think it stands in Wiltshire...I'm sure someone will tell me if I am wrong!

Hello Rosa Thanks for Your Kind Comments, Its Was Interesting Reading About The Tower. In 1944 An American Military Plane Heading For Zeals Airfield Crashed Into The Roof Of The Tower Killing The Five Airmen On Board. I Bet Its A Nice View From The Top, Best Regards linrich

Linrich,

Hello Linrich, that was very sad and unfortunately in the same year 9 American servicemen were killed when they crashed at Snag Farm, Wincanton on their return to that air field. There is a memorial plaque just up the road from me, where I watched a poppy wreath being laid on the 11th Nov. Although the airfield at Zeals is very flat and open, it is surrounded by hills. Thank you for your kind comment. Best wishes, Rosa.

Who..Ray,

Yes, I remember that. It's nice when you can put strands of history together. Here and Edington are such amazing places. I wish the tower had been open. I would love to have gone to the top on such a nice day!

Cheers, Rosa.

ian1949,

I don't like heights Ian, but I have been to the top, and it seemed to take ages to climb the stone stairs but it was worth it, although I didn't go too near the edge! I think I would even do it again :)
