20 years ago, on 15 November 1991, Serbian-Montenegrin Navy (Yugoslav navy) dared to shelling selected targets in the city of Split. One of them was a UNESCO World Heritage Site (Diocletian's palace with its historic neighborhood). Hostile blockade of all major Croatian ports and waterways of the internal Croatian territorial waters, blazing with the invasion of armed hordes that were already dissolving the Croatian inland, spilled a cup of patience of the attacked party.
Battle of the Split channel, Boj u Splitskom kanalu and the Battle of Korčula channel, Boj u Korčulanskom kanalu, both battles called also: Battle of the Dalmatian channels was closed with a very significant victory for the newly established Croatian Navy. Croatian coast, the sea and the islands except the island of Vis and the sea on the state's far south, soon, from then until the end of the Croatian War for Independence, has become a truly Croatian.
Unique world oddity occurred on 15 November 1991, directed by a bunch of crazies from the military headquarters of the JNA (Yugoslav People’s Army) in Belgrade: the city of Split was shelled by the Yugoslav missile frigate named - Split, whose home port was - Split! Finally, is it surprising that the stolen Croatian warship of the Serbo-Montenegrin terrorists-marines, after their escape in the Montenegrin waters, was renamed - Beograd?
After years of dying of shame, placed to a lay by in the Bay of Kotor of Montenegro, five-year republic which last said goodbye to Yugoslavia-Greater Serbia, a former city of Split namesake killer-vessel was destined for a scrap. City of Split as her provider name remains glossy old gold.
quite the history!
