Part of this magnificent coastline is depicted in this shot taken from Sledgates near the village of Fylingthorpe..That hotel on the far promontory must be one of the windiest places on the UK east coast. The views from up there are awesome

DearJim,
It is still New Year - in a way - so I trust that you enjoy 2012 to the full, from one end to the other.
The Ravenscar Hill is remembered as a special landmark on the Whitby-Scarborough Road. It was the glacial deposits and the glacial spillways that kept me fascinated along this part of the coast and in the Cleveland Hills.
I had a geographer associate at Halifax who introduced me to Filey, Scarborough and all things geomorphologic in this field, for even on the other side of the world my education was so very British that I knew far more about your area by the time I matriculated than I did about my own hills and valleys and coasts. But as a geographer myself, I set about correcting the balance for the next generation, which meant seeing what I had learnt about (in UK), as I began to discover the field laboratories in my own back yard!
This is a much loved landscape. Thanks.
Ian

Greetings to all my friends, old and new..I am delighted to read so many positive comments...Sorry for taking so long to respond and I look forward to visiting each of your galleries in the near future
luciano bernardi~~~Many thanks for your appreciation Luciano..I'm glad you enjoyed my photos :))
Ian Stehbens~~~What a fascinating insight to your early days Ian...I had no idea that this shot would evoke a few memories from some one on the other side of the world :) I can imagine that your enthusiasm for geology was fired by what you saw and learned here on the Yorkshire coast..That it has carried you through your years of work and in your teachings says very much about your love for nature and the secrets hidden in the ground beneath! This is most evident in your wonderful gallery and explains the reason why so many of your images celebrate the fascinating geology that is mother Earth!
The "Peak" zone of Ravenscar was the site of very polluting industrial processes during the 17th to late 19th century when the extraction of Alum and it's crude processing plants ripped this beautiful landscape apart..It must have been decades before the spillages, spoil heaps, and industrial relics succumbed to the effects of nature! I discovered this photo and I suspect that you will have visited this very place all those years ago :)
Salivo~~~Thank you so much Sabine..This is such a pretty bay surrounded by massive cliffs where some of the oldest rocks on earth are exposed..Fossil hunters can be seen and heard chipping away at the rocks in the hope of discovering something big!
I'm thankful for all your amazing comments guys, it is a pleasure to receive so much positive feedback..your visit, comments and your likes are much appreciated!

Feika~~~Your Holland is indeed rich in beautiful pastoral landscapes, the patch-work quilt of rich earth fields in those flat lands, stretching for many kilometres, the result from a thousand years in tending the soil and reclaiming huge tracts from the sea.. Dear Feika, you portray your beloved Holland with a profound understanding of its peoples and culture! Beauty is every where my friend!
dip-photos~~~I'm grateful for your kind review! Such scenery is commonplace in my region and for that, I am most thankful!
Kind regards to you both!
Jim
