The Roman Bath pub, Sampson's Square in the centre of York, was built close to the south east defences of the Roman fort of the 2nd century. During excavations a caldarium or hot room of a legionary bath-house was discovered in the pub cellar. The 'bath' can now be viewed within the pub through a glass cover.
