There are very fast tidal flows through The Narrows (the deep channel between Strangford and Portaferry). These occur because a large part of Strangford Loch empties and fills through this narrow channel. When this fast moving water hits the open sea at the Bar Mouth, the sea can be very rough. You can see a list of the marine wrecks here
