Macedonian Lion, like the Macedonian star of Vergina, is another symbol of the Macedonian people, culture and tradition, popularly called "Лавче“. Along with the star are among the oldest symbols still used in Europe today. On the territory of Macedonia lions once lived, which is supported by historians and fossil finds from the vicinity of town Delchevo. Hunting of lions was popular among Ancient Macedonians and consequently found a number of mosaics and paintings with scenes of hunting lions. As a Christian symbol, the lion takes its place on the iconostasis and priest's chairs in the Macedonian churches. The Golden Lion is an unofficial symbol of the Republic of Macedonia. It was used in the past for setting Macedonia free from the Ottoman Empire. Today the lion is a symbol used from many parties in Macedonia especially VMRO-DPMNE.
