Market Place, Somerton

In 900AD Somerton was said to be the capital of Wessex. In the background is the Butter Cross building that was rebuilt in 1673.

And an interesting building it looks too, you wouldn't get permission to build it now. Nice place for the war memorial. Seats and not a bit of litter very nice.

Years ago I remember they had 'Acient Capital of Wessex' under the Somerton sign. They have changed the wording slightly now. Such a pleasant town though.

Thank you John. Who..Ray usually comes up trumps! It is a pity that the advertising boards are there for a photo, but if I could only have got the beautiful buildings to the left in the picture as well, it would have taken the eye away from them.
