In 900AD Somerton was said to be the capital of Wessex. In the background is the Butter Cross building that was rebuilt in 1673.

And an interesting building it looks too, you wouldn't get permission to build it now. Nice place for the war memorial. Seats and not a bit of litter very nice.

It is a lovely little town Ian. They do a great Victorian Christmas evening.

I like to shop here K@rin, they have some very good individual shops. I am pleased you like the soft framing. I thought it suited the picture :)
Who...Ray
Years ago I remember they had 'Acient Capital of Wessex' under the Somerton sign. They have changed the wording slightly now. Such a pleasant town though.
Thank you all for your kind comments, Rosa.

Thank you John. Who..Ray usually comes up trumps! It is a pity that the advertising boards are there for a photo, but if I could only have got the beautiful buildings to the left in the picture as well, it would have taken the eye away from them.
Cheers, Rosa.

Hi Rosa
The picture and the mention of the Butte Cross got me thinking as I have passed through a number of villages with similar buildings, and yet I could only find one that I have uploaded from Alston
Very English it seems, nice photo!
Best wishes Peter

Good morning Peter, thanks for the link, another fine example. Every small town had one it seems. It's great that they have survived the years!
Cheers, Rosa.
