This is a most interesting archaeological feature and I will write about it soon. This is the inner moat of two concentric moats that surrounded a fortified village. It was very significant in the history of Tonga, during there internal wars that resulted in the unifying of Tonga around the end of the 1700s and into the early 19th Century, at the time of the arrival of the first European ships, whalers, and missionaries.
