Patrick Bronte and Maria Branwell were married at St Oswald's in 1812. Their family became famous as The Bronte sisters.

A fine old gravestone standing alongside the altar in the old chancel of this church bears the epitaph : ‘ Here lyeth the body of DIANA the ninth daughter and twentieth child of Sir Robert Markham of Sedgbrook in the county of Lincoln, Bart. by Rebeccah the daughter of Sir Edward Hufsey of Hunington in the same county. Bart. She died of ye Small Pox at Hawksworth on 21 day of November 1678, aged 15years.’ A poignant reminder of those times.
