A Casa de Mateus foi mandada construir no inicio do século XVIII pelo 3º Morgado de Mateus, António José Botelho Mourão. O projecto deste palácio foi desenvolvido pelo arquitecto Nicolau Nasoni, o mesmo que projectou a torre dos clérigos no Porto. É uma das obras mais significativas da arquitectura civil Portuguesa do período barroco. Actualmente a Casa de Mateus é administrada pela fundação com o mesmo nome, fundada em 1971. Mateus é uma das 30 freguesias do concelho de Vila Real, tem 4,14 km2 e conta com 3451 habitantes.
