Feast day of Saint Lucy, Sveta Luce in Dalmatia, is traditionally celebrated on the 13th December in Split, Croatia.

The crypt of the mausoleum of Emperor Diocletian, dedicated to the Christian virgin-martyr and saint, especially on that day is

all day open for the pilgrims. Lucia of Syracuse was executed during the Great Persecution of that Roman emperor born in Solin,

near Split, a key figure in the history of the foundation of today's Split. Because Lucy did not renounce Christ, she was blinded

by eye extraction.

In the crypt, which is the chapel of St. Luce, is the altar with her statue. There is a natural fountain with a source of pure

drinking water. Pilgrims in silence, or in prayer, go around the altar and rub their eyes with the water in order to preserve

or improve their eye sight.

Sv. Luce is primarily a patron of the blind, and she shares small gifts to children, usually sweets. She symbolizes the victory

of light over darkness, too.
