This 20th century building is the last of three castles on this site. The original 14th century castle was owned by the Scrope family of Bolton Castle in Wnsleydale. The story goes that a Scrope found Upsall castle in ruins and he dreamt that if he stood on London Bridge he would be able to rebuild the castle. Dressed as a beggar he did so and was approached by another beggar who told Scrope that if only he could get to Yorkshire he would become a rich man. He went on to tell Scrope that there was gold buried under an elder tree at Upsall Castle. We are told that Scrope hurried back to Upsall, found the gold and rebuit the castle.
