Wentworth Castle forms the core of Stainborough Park and historically is the most important building on the site. The Castle, which forms a rectangle on plan, was built in four distinct phases each of which exhibits its own architectural and aesthetic expression:
Classical vernacular 'Cutler House' (north wing) built in 1670-72 for St Gervase Cutler. Baroque east wing built in 1710-20 and designed by Johann Bodt for Thomas Wentworth. Palladian south and west wing built circa 1760 under the guidance of Charles Ross for William Wentworth. Victorian extension to west wing built in 1897.
