Barge traffic on Mississippi, in Cairo. The ripple effect!

Selected for Google Maps and Google Earth

The steamboat industry on Mississippi River was replaced with barges, there is no longer a significant reason for river traffic to stop in Cairo. In 1929, the Cairo Mississippi River Bridge was completed, linking Missouri with Illinois.

The photo was taken early morning on this bridge. It is undergoing major reconstruction (Nov 2011), in my opinion colossal waste of money! As the traffic is using the interstate.

But maybe saving Cairo completely from bankruptcy!

I suspect, it was named after Cairo, because of the Mississippi is as mighty as the Nile.

Also, this was the first place to escape slavery for the black in southern states. Even today, the population is 60% black.
