“Kapnikarea” or Church of Madonna Kapnikarea is called this small Byzantine church dating from the 11th century and situated in the center of Athens, Ermou Street, the busiest street of the historic city center.
The church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and belongs to the University of Athens, so we called the "Sacred Temple University."
The architectural style is of a complex four-columned cruciform reported that was built on the site of an older church which was erect Evdokia, Athenian wife of Emperor Theodosius the Little (408 – 450 A.D.). The original church was built in turn (as customary) on the foundations of an ancient Greek temple, dedicated to a female goddess, probably Athena or Demeter. In the church are built building elements such as columns with Roman capitals and built sculptures and inscriptions.
On the north side of the temple has been added the chapel of Santa Barbara.
