"Steel Life" Harahan Railway Bridge - 1916

Selected for Google Maps and Google Earth

The Harahan Bridge ( 1916). Spans over Mississippi River from Arkansas to Memphis, Tennessee.

These are actually 2 separate bridges, one for train and one for cars. It is about 5,000 ft long. Named after the president of the railroad company Rock Island, who was killed in a car accident, as the bridge was under construction. His car was hit by a train!

There is now a newer bridge in Memphis, about 1 mile north of this one on Rte 40.

When was this shot? You can no longer go near the bridge due to some "Bridge" climbers who, by rappeling from it, got our access taken away. Thanx for Sharing.
