This cove has been used for centuries and was probably anchorage for Spanish ships when this area was part of the Spanish Empire of the Americas. Inland from this point is the famous Mission San Juan Capistrano, dating to 1776. Spanish influence is so prevalent here that many or most towns, streets and landmarks have Spanish names. I would go so far as saying that Spanish is a second--first language here. The name "California" is Spanish.
