As you can see, no mention is made on this interpretation board (which is otherwise pretty good) of the initial work here of industrial quarrying for feedstock for a lime kiln.
The unusual "caves" beneathe the bluff go, therefore, quite unexplained and so arise stories about "Maori Caves" I guess.
