This is the so-called divi-divi tree on Eagle Beach on Aruba as it was featured on many postcards, posters and promotional material on Aruba for years.
Aruba is known for its strangely shaped trees called 'divi-divis'. The growth and shape of this tree is formed by the steady winds from the northeast that cool the island. The divi-divi on Eagle beach (actually a kind of mangrove called Fofoti) was a particularly fine example and people loved to take pictures with this pretty tree in the background. Sadly, in february 2006 vandals found it necessary to take a saw to the tree and cut down half of it. Efforts were made to prop up the tree, hoping that somehow the ends would grow back together, but to no result. So, sadly enough, the tree remains cut down and so serves as a symbol of the cruelty of man toward nature. Shame!

I really like trees, especially when they have a special grow form. Near to where i live there is such a tree. I visitid it often and took pictures under different light conditions and seasons.
hihi ik heb deze boom ook van de ikea boven mijn bank hangen... zie je dat uitsteekseltje.. daar heb ik een keer zo onwijs hard mijn hoofd tegen gestoten dat ik bloedend naar de ehbo moest(met pasen heel lang geleden toen ik voor mijn dochtertje een kleed in de schaduw probeerde neer te leggen, maar de wind dat een mission impossible maakte!!) ik heb begrepen dat vandalen m vorig jaar gemollesteerd hebben... zo zonde!!!!
Hallo Wim, nun habe ich doch dieses tolle Foto entdeckt. Wenn ich den Tag >17000 anklicke, kommt die Meldung. "Wim hat noch kein Foto hochgeladen". Das hatte ich nämlich vor einiger Zeit schon mal versucht und da habe ich gedacht, Du hast versehentlich den Tag falsch benannt.
Wenn man aber unter Aruba sucht, dann wird es angezeigt. Sehr schönes Foto. Interesasnt daran finde ich auch, den kurzen Schatten direkt unter dem Baum. Liebe Grüße von Elisabeth
Hallo Elisabeth. komisch, scheint einen Fehler zu sein, bei mir funktioniert es. Ich surfe aber meistens mit dem "Apple Safari Browswer", weil ich mit dem "Internet Explorer" bei Panoramio immer wieder Probleme habe, Seiten werden nicht angezeigt.

This beautiful tree is not a Divi Divi tree (Caesalpinia coriaria), but a Buttonwood tree (Conocarpue erecta), called Fofoti in papiamento (Aruba's native language). The Divi Divi tree is clled Watapana in papiamento. People seem to label all wind-swept trees as Divi Divi trees, but actually, almost all of Aruba's trees are bent by the wind like this.
