Aruba, Eagle Beach, Divi Divi Tree

This is the so-called divi-divi tree on Eagle Beach on Aruba as it was featured on many postcards, posters and promotional material on Aruba for years. Aruba is known for its strangely shaped trees called 'divi-divis'. The growth and shape of this tree is formed by the steady winds from the northeast that cool the island. The divi-divi on Eagle beach (actually a kind of mangrove called Fofoti) was a particularly fine example and people loved to take pictures with this pretty tree in the background. Sadly, in february 2006 vandals found it necessary to take a saw to the tree and cut down half of it. Efforts were made to prop up the tree, hoping that somehow the ends would grow back together, but to no result. So, sadly enough, the tree remains cut down and so serves as a symbol of the cruelty of man toward nature. Shame!
