Your photo clearly shows a puzzling effect: the right (SW) wall looks as if it has been carved by erosion, but the other side appears to be little changed since the crack opened. We have not figured this out. Suggestions here and/or to science@smoo.com

Rik Smoody, have you ever been to the Black Point Fissures at Mono Lake? They are similar to this crack, and exhibit the same kind of differentiation from side to side at some points. I think differential weathering may be the culprit, as well as localized mineral leaching and air bubbles.

Great photo, by the way! The textures are amazing.

Nice photo Ron. This is an interesting region - lava flows and volcanic cones, ancient lake beds and 10,000 years of human history. The steam-explosion ring at Arrow Gap is covered with ancient junipers - very picturesque. Regards, CB

CB, It is a very interesting region, but is so remote that it;s not well known. If it was closer to populated areas, it wold be a major tourist attraction. I'm not familiar with arrow gap. Is it in Oregon?

cbaisan, 17 hours ago, said:

Yes, not far from your photo, west side of Christmas Valley along 514. The geologic feature is the same as the one at Fort Rock. Table rock is nearby. I think the remoteness is part of the attraction.

You have posted some great photos. Greetings from Arizona, Chris
