Love this image Ron. The strong saturation is bold yet not too bold. Really all of your work is excellent.
Greetings from Virginia, Tom

Thanks Tom. This photo was edited as an HDR image using Photomatix software. Essentially, I shot three separate exposures, one the usual average exposure, one two stops over exposed, and one two stops underexposed. The three exposures were then blended with the software. It works very well to expand the tonal range of the image, giving great detail in the shadows, highlights and mid tones.

Hey Ron. I had a feeling this was HDR. I have the Photomatix software myself but haven't used it alot. This is one of my early tries at it. I think the exposures I used on it were one stop apart.
Regards, Tom

Hi Tom, I like the Photomatix software a lot. I'm a retired photojournalist who has fought the high contrast/ maximum tonal range battle for a long time. Photomatix solves a lot of problems and gives me a tonal range in many of my photos that I never thought I'd be able to get. If you go to the Photmatix web site, and click on the user gallery, I have several photos in the user gallery. Ron

Hey Ron great shots on the Photomatix site. Congrats. Forgive my ignorance but are you bracketing shutter speed? I've heard conflicting views on this but have always assumed keeping a constant aperture was critical.
On a side note are you using Capture NX for RAW processing before Photomatix?
Thanks, Tom

Hi Tom, You always bracket shutter speed. Precise registration of each of the three exposures is critical and if you change the aperture you will change the way the exposures register. I have Capture NX, but I usually open my RAW images in Photoshop. Ron

Another great pic! Though the actual location of your photo as placed on Google Earth is the Little North Santiam River, just downstream from the confluence of Battle Ax and Opal Creeks. Actually, being familiar with that entire area, I would say those pics actually ARE of Opal Creek, as the Little North Santiam is somewhat larger. I'm guessing the pics are misplaced. Opal Creek is upstream from where you have the pics located on Google. I cross-reference two map systems, the standard USGS Topo maps plus my own Delorme Topo USA 6.0, a 3D map system, in order to locate accurately points of interest found on Google Earth and MSN's Virtual Earth.
