Natchez-under-the-Hill and its trappings

Selected for Google Maps and Google Earth

Natchez-under-the-Hill was the most notorious river landing on the entire Mississippi.

It was KNOWN for a row of saloons built on stilts over the river, called “trap-door saloons.”

Naïve travelers who wandered into one of these saloons, were often clubbed to death and robbed of their belongings; their bodies dropped into the river thru trap doors in the floor of the saloon

I have survived this year visit, and have only few scars and photos from this experience.

Isle of Capri Casino is a stationary boat Casino in Natchez, Mississippi and is open daily 24 hours. The casino's 17,364 square foot gaming space features 620 gaming machines and ten table games. So they can still rob you blind, but it is legal and voluntary!

In the background is Vidalia bridge, crossing to Louisiana.

Before I read your first comment I thought it was a working remnant of ships Mark Twain describe in his "Life on Mississippi". Nice take.

Urias, actually there was a Mark Twain guest house just few meters from where I took the photo.

I am sure, it was a bordello, when he was alive!

All along Mississippi, there are casinos on the river. Must be some state law, which does not allow them to open one on land!
