This was one of the most succcesful mines in California, at which miners tunneled under the earth for gold instead of washing away huge amounts of rock and soil from the surface, as in the placer method. (Many thanks to the viewer who suggested the exact location of the photo; I took it more than thirty years ago, and my guess was many miles off!)
