These are pretty cool! My younger daughter learned about them in school, and they called them 'Conks' I love the growth rings. Good angle you picked to show the many of them.

Well, it must be somewhat damp there judging by the moss at the top. We have the same sort of things here too though, and I don't think it is overly wet here.

Vicki, it probably is damp a lot of the time. There's kind of a bog/marsh feel to the ground, so there might be some underground springs in the area.

Thanks Anne! Yes, they're gigantic, and they made me think of steps for small animals to help them climb the tree.
