Pisaster brevispinus (Giant Pink Star) - This one may break all size records for a sea star. Too bad I did not have a measuring tape, but would estimate 1.5 to 2m tip to tip. My references state that maximum size is 65cm across, which is much smaller than this specimen.

Gangly critter Derek. I don't think I've ever seen a Pink Star until now.. Great shot and clarity. It appears as if your not too far from the surface.. L1

Hi Marty; It was crazy huge; must be radioactive. You are correct, only about 20' deep at this point and the sunshine gave me a bit of light. regards Derek

Looks like there was something red colored in the laundry along with your white socks NatureDiver - very unique and rare image !

You guys & gals are too funny. Dyed laundry with bubble gum stuck all over. It did not blow me any bubbles though.... yet. Just had my tanks filled and I hope to find it again and take a measurement. I still think it may be the largest ever.

absolutely an amazing capture ! They must be a very rare species! Like !!!

Derek Holzapfel on May 19, 2012

Thank you Bartolomeo. Actually, this is a very common star in our waters. But I am convinced that this individual one is the largest ever. Best wishes, Derek

Wow! What fantastic star! You can always try to get your hand in one of the shots for scale. I'm thinking of diving with a toy truck ;)

Derek Holzapfel on May 20, 2012

I like the idea of a toy truck Denise. In the mean time I have added a measuring tape to my dive kit. Now to find this Star again, that will be a challenge. cheers Derek
