Hi Nawitka. The lock gates and sluices have to be opened and closed by the boaters. This lock took the boat up to the level you see here. It involved opening the gates behind the viewpoint, moving the boat in then closing the gates behind it. Then the sluices for the gates you can see are opened to fill the lock to the level of the canal ahead. Then the gates can be opened and away you go! What amused me was that all the hard work was done by the two women while the men stayed on the boat.
