Woodford Halse was a major junction of the Great Central Railway (GCR)on the main line opened in 1899 between South Yorkshire, the East Midlands and London Marylebone. The village expanded rapidly at the turn of the C19th and C20th centuries to accommodate the workers on the railway. My grandfather came from Grimsby (where the GCR had a coal-shipment facility at Immingham Docks) to work here as a signalman in the second decade of the C20th and lived in the fifth house on the left. The line was closed under the recommendations of the Beeching Report published in 1963.
