Looking down into the oven and into the intense heat

Not selected for Google Earth or Google Maps [?]

Here is the bricked interior of the oven. It has had a very big and intense wood fire burning in it for 2 hours. All the ashes and cinders are then scraped out pretty assiduously, into a pit which is outside, and just outside the doorway you can see at the bottom left of the pic. The radiation from the bricks is intense. It was too hot for a start and when the pig was lowered in it burned in a minute or so and had to be quickly hauled out. The oven was given a half hour to cool a bit with its top off. After that cooking proceeded normally for two and a half hours.
