On the last day of autumn, I travel on nearly 100 miles (180 km) on icy roads before I got to clear dry pavement. My goal was to travel into Death Valley via Titus Canyon and then spend the first day of winter in the valley seeing places I had not been able to visit last April.
From this photo and for the next 48 photos, ending with 6668080 (Moonrise over Big Smoky Valley), are a selection of some of the 1,000 photos I took on the three day trip.
I have found that visiting Death Valley (the driest area in the country) is the extreme contrast to where I live and work on the Olympic Peninsula (the wettest area in the country).
The solstice (10:08 PM our time, December 21, 2007) was marked by a wind storm which nearly blew my tent and me away. Thank goodness it all held together and the next day was calm.
