Hi kgrabe. I took this shot 9 years ago when visisting Ireland exactly where the sign id drag. I am not irish so I do not know te history of it. 10 months ago James Kelly, I suposse irish man. told me that the wreck is from one ship call sumbeam than ran agroung in a storm around 28th Jnuary 1903.
That all I can tell you. Are you sure it is so ald than 1812? It seem very long time for a wreck to subxist.

Hi 4ullas, no, I am not sure, so unless someone else has more information then is must be the sunbeam. I think it is possible for a wreck to last a long time as this one was under the sand. If you compare your picture 9 years ago with mine 7 years ago you see how it is coming out of the sand. All the best from ireland also!

Hello kgrabe. Yes, I am indeed an Irishman who has family connections with this part of Kerry and I have spent holidays here for every year of my life (61). The photographs you took are the same wreck that I identified as the Sunbeam. Its picture and history appear in many local establishments. This of course does not necessarily mean it is correct! I would be very interested to know how you identified it as The Margaret. The sand around the wreck rises and falls from year to year and for many years it was not visible at all. The shifting sands have just taken a remarkable turn this week (Sat Dec 13th 2008) when the sea breached the wall of sand dunes for the first time in many hundreds of years. A 200 metre gap has opened up cutting off about 1km of the 4km spit including the tower at its tip(see other photos in Panoramio and Google Earth). Luckily the wreck remains are not at any great risk as of yet.

Hi James, thanks for the interesting info. I think I got it from this book "Shipwrecks of the Irish Coast: 932-1997" E.J.Bourke. I know this from checking my online purchases in 2002, but I can't find it at the moment, but will keep looking. Yes I'd heard about the sea breaching the strand and that's when I came here to look at the map. all the best from cork, karl.
