Yes, My wife and I have travelled about in most of Scotland 7 times since 1980. Mostly B&B, and we seem to have beeen blessed with good (or fairly good) weather in 95% of daytime.
I am told, that phoneboxes have been modernized by BT due to vandalism to or theft of the coinboxes, so that's why one feel fooled in case of need. However though: in case of emergency you can still reach help without any card or coin.
Here is another type of Scottish mailbox in Fort Augustus.
