"УКРАІНСЬКА ЛНСАНКА" (Ukrainian Pysanka)

Selected for Google Maps and Google Earth

This stone лисанка (pysanka) is located in a small roadside garden on острів Хортиця (Khortytsya Island). Although the paint is faded and the grass needs to be trimmed, it is an apt reminder of the timeless traditions, dating to pre-Christian times (prior to 988 when Christianity became the official religion of the Kievian Rus), associated with the giving of the лисанка (pysanka), more recently commemorated by giving лисанка (pysanka) as gifts at Easter time. The title above translates the first line on the base of the monument; the remaining three words in the inscription "Краса", "Добробут" and "Родовід" translate as "Beauty", "Prosperity" and "Ancestry", respectively.

You know, dear Mark, it's same like with the famous Greek or Roman antic statues, at origin they were painted in wild colours, which would seem kitch to our modern eyes, but, in time, they lost the colours and become what they are today: classic masterpieces!

thank you for shaing with us such beauty!

You are more the welcome Elena. This stone egg is located in a small roadside park on Khortytsya Island which is a national reserve sort of like a national park. There are some other pictures dating to about 1995 posted in Pano which you can see on GE and which show this egg with fairly recent new paint (probably done at the time of Ukrainian independence in 1990) which has now faded to what you see here. I agree with you and like this better; kind of gives it an air of antiquity.

Greetings, Mark
