Picnic day - Sharjah Desert / Fossil Rocks ......{by Bassam}

Selected for Google Maps and Google Earth

Officially called Jebel Maleihah, this large outcrop is more widely known as Fossil Rock, after abundance of marine fossils that can be found on its slopes. This area is rich with the fossils of shells and small sea creatures that were on the ocean floor millions of years ago when water covered much of Arabia. These were created when limestone formed around their shells to make a mould, which then solidified to leave a perfect imprint.

The ever-shifting sands found inland from all the major coastal settlements create an endless variety of landscapes, colours and vegetation. The beautiful desert of Sharjah attracts visitors, who are impressed by the vastness and charm of the desert and there is nothing compared to making a trip to the desert to watch the sunset.

Dear Jens-Aage, no restaurants nearby that is for sure. But, who needs that! Just take what one needs from home and enjoy the view.

The desert, and specially this one, is just breathtaking. I hope you would once have the chance to have a safari trip and experience the beauty it offers.
