Dickens on the Strand, is an annual event in Galveston! It seems like the whole town gets dressed up in the historical costumes. There are people watching the parade in better costumes, then people actually walking in the parade. The afternoon festivities continue after the parade is over. The historic downtown is closed to traffic (except horses and horse drawn carriages).
The only drawback is the English food, but you can always opt for real food!! ;-)
Dickens on The Strand began almost 40 years ago with a mission: save The Strand’s historic buildings from demolition. A group of Galvestonians, understood the historical significance of the endangered structures and took action. In December of 1974, a potluck supper was organized in The Strand to gain public awareness about the potential destruction of what is now a National Historic Landmark District.
