The view is to the north-west. The mass of street lights mark the eastern suburbs of the city of Gloucester in the area just beneath the skyline and the strategic highway the A417 can clearly be seen making its way north-west from the lower edge of the image. The well-lit junction with the A46 can also be seen at the lower right edge. The almost straight line of lights rising at about 20 degrees to the horizontal left to right is the original Roman road, Ermin Street, out of Gloucester to Birdlip Hill and thence south-east to Cirencester. In the far distance are the Black Mountains in Wales and, to the far left, the hills of the Forest of Dean.
