Clifton Village School and Dovecote.

Selected for Google Maps and Google Earth

The Dovecote is fact one of the largest Dovecotes in England. Pigeons breed throughout the year were once housed in dovecote colonies all across the country as a source of winter meat. This particular dovecote has an incredible 2,300 nesting places all of which go 14 inches into the wall. The School behind and to the right of the Dovecote was built in 1871. It opened for business in 1872 with 48 pupils and also did a night school for adults.

Hi Rosa, thank you for your visit, like and comments. I'm well now, I've had a health scare since before Xmas - seem to be on the right side of it now. In fact just to show how confident I am, I've invested in a new camera and lenses:)

Hi Ian, I believe the Romans introduced the idea of breeding pigeons/doves in dovecotes for fresh meat in winter. Thanks for your visit and encouraging comments.

Mark, that's an amazing snippet

of information.

I know a Pipe Tune called Dovecote

Park but had no idea of the meaning

of Dovecote.

Great photo of an interesting subject.

Andrew.
