La construcción de la biblioteca de Celso fue comenzada por Tiberio Julio Celso, que era Gobernador General de la Provincia de Asia. Esta persona quiso dejar algo para que se le recordara después de su muerte y decidió construir esta biblioteca. Cuando murió, su hijo continuó su obra y la acabó en el 135 d. C. La tumba de Celso se encuentra en la parte posterior. En los nichos de la parte inferior hay cuatro estatuas que representan a la Sabiduría, la Virtud, la Ciencia y la Fortuna. La puerta de Maceo - Mitrídates la construyeron estos dos esclavos en agradecimiento al Emperador Augusto por haberlos liberados.


The construction of the Library of Celsus was begun by Tiberius Julius Celsus, who was Governor General of the Province of Asia. This person wanted to leave something to be remembered after his death and decided to build this library. When he died his son continued his work and finished in 135. C. Celso's tomb is in the back. In the niches at the bottom there are four statues representing Wisdom, Virtue, Scientific and Fortune.
