Tanah Lot is a rock formation in the sea. Its name means precisely Balinese language "land in the sea." The temple of Tanah Lot is built on a large rock that was formed by the wave embite through the years and can be accessed just as the tide is low. It is said to be built in the fifteenth century on the initiative of a priest named Nirartha, who, discovering the island formed by this great rock, considered a sacred place where they should build a temple to pray to the gods In 1980 part of the temple of Tanah Lot began to crumble, so, the Japanese government made a loan to the government of Indonesia to 800 billion rupees in order to restore it.
