I've been wondering for years about the occasionally very inconsistent and non-transparent approach of Panoramio to the selection of pictures for Google Earth. So far I didn't consider it a big deal, just one of these odd things around. That view changed today when I coincidentally realized that THIS picture - among others - was silently removed from GE a couple of weeks ago.

So here's my question to Panoramio folks:

Cheers, --michael

For the topic of Google Earth aproved photographs, should be considered that this application has mainly a geographical character. I think that Panoramio was created as a ground level photographic complement of the satellite images; furthermore Panoramio users have surpassed this original orientation with photographs of more creative freedom. Perhaps the Panoramio Groups are a resource to allow these not GE approved photographs can be viewed by other Panoramio users, regardless of the G. Earth original application. Another point is that I think these photographs are selected by an automatic program of limited intelligence and some erratic behavior.

Thanks for your comments, amg and CEFER. I understand the major arguments on both sides and basically agree with them. Just a few points why I'm irritated by this case:

  • This is not a picture of my in-laws at the last family outing. This picture shows the beauty of this Earth. (Ironically I have a couple of other pictures rejected because they are too similar to Google Earth)

  • This picture is not a new submission, it has been on GE for years and consistently retained its popularity.

  • Maybe the thing that rubs me most: It's done quietly without a word of notification or explanation. It would not be a problem to send an automated message with a short explanation what's going on. Doing this kind of stealth activities doesn't exactly create an atmosphere of trust and makes me wonder how much interest in a Panoramio community there really is...

Groet, Xander
