Oh yes, I see what you mean! I do believe that the San Francisco Russians (the first wave of immigration) came from areas around Moscow Oblast, so that would make sense. Thanks for the link!

P.S.: "Waves" of Russian immigration to the USA:

  • Late 19th Century due to pogroms, hunger, etc.

  • White Russians and Jews during & after the revolution and civil war.

  • Soviet Jews (then also "economic refugees") after Glasnost/Perestroika.
