GEOGRAPHY: The county of Evrytania is one of the fifty-one prefectures of Greece and belongs to the region of Central Greece. Its capital is Karpenissi.
The county is almost entirely covered by mountains, including Timfristos and Panetolikos in the south and rivers as Karpenissiotis, Agrafiotis, Megdovas in the east and Acheloos in the west, which flows into the Ionian Sea. It is one of the most sparsely populated counties in Greece.
HISTORY: The ancient Evrytanes lived the rough mountainous region of North Aetolia and were regarded as the strongest and wilder of the Aetolian people. Around of them lived other people like Aperanti, Ofionis, Thespeis, Dolopes, Ainians and Acarnanians. The name of the area due to the mythical hero Evrytos, who reigned in the city Oechalia, which was built by Melanefs, king of Dryopes. The location of Oechalia not determined exactly, some place it at Palaiokastro near the village of Koryschades, close to Karpenisi, while others identify the location near Antania at the rough mountain of Kobolo.
Evrytanes participated in the Trojan War, others led by Gouneas, king of Kyfos, others with Phoenix were with Achiles and his comrades, and others led by Thoas, Podalirius and Mahaonas. In 429 BC the Athenian general Demosthenes attacked the region of Locris and Evrytania, but was defeated by the Aetolians and Evrytanes, then speaking their own dialect unintelligible from other Greeks. Evrytanes together with Thespeis and Ofioneis, there were strong elements of Aetolian Confederacy, which fought and occupied last of the Greek territory to the Romans.
In Turkish period, Evrytania belonged to the administrative region (satzaki) of Trikala and Christian population was about 40.000 residents, while ecclesiastically belonged to the diocese of Litzas and Agrafa belonged to the Metropolis of Larissa. The Turks gave privileges to Evrytanes, autonomy and authority, armed teams are allowed to be, asarmatoloi (armed people with police duties) and acknowledged their armatolikia (armed forces). The inaccessible mountains of Evrytania became a safe haven for thieves. The armatoles Chormopoulos from Agrafa and Livignis from Karpenisi revolutionized in 1684 - 1696 A.D. and Liberakis Gerakaris from 1688 to 1699. Evrytanes also were Katsantonis, Gerodimos, Boukouvalas and other militants. The Revolution of 1821 was declared in Kerasovo on May 10 and the contribution of the Struggle Evrytanian was general and enthusiastic. In Evrytania concluded tough and decisive battles by George Karaiskakis, Markos Botsaris etc.
Evrytania were the Pavlos Bakogiannis’ home land, politician killed by the terrorist organisation of “17 November” in Athens at 26-09-1989.
