The Monastery of Proussos, is the monastery of the prefecture of Evrytania. Located 31 km south of Karpenissi and 53 northwest of Agrinio, 2 km from the village, and is a spiritual and pilgrimage center of the whole region. It is built on a majestic landscape, a steep, rocky area between the mountains Chelidona, Kaliakouda and Timfristos, which is overgrown by trees.

The Monastery of Proussos is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin and celebrates on August 23.

The name of the monastery due to the miraculous image of the "Lady Prousiotissa." This image comes from Bursa, Asia Minor. Believed to be the work of St. Luke.

According to the tradition, the monastery founded in the ninth century (according to others in the 12th century, with the dating of the oldest church frescoes). At that time, Emperor of Byzantium was Theophilus (829-842), who were iconoclast. The image of the Virgin was at a temple of Bursa, but in fear of being destroyed by decree of the Emperor, fled to Central Greece. Tradition connects the shelter of the image, the current location of the monastery, with miracles that occurred during the transfer of the image there. According to tradition, the young man took her, along with a servant, decided to establish a monastery here, and found that it was impossible to move the image from there. The same became the first monks, with the names Dennis and Timothy.
