Piering at the Planets

Selected for Google Maps and Google Earth

Venus and Jupiter galloping toward their 2012 rendezvous. Mercury is in the pic, too, but you REALLY have to work to find it. (It wasn't visible to the eye. I could only find it later by enlarging the photo. Amazing how fast it disappears. A week earlier it was clearly visible. Kamaly posted a shot of that view.)

Bend and stretch...reach for the stars...I see Jupiter, where the heck is Mercury? (Glad to see you are happily back home in MA!). Cheers, pear

Thanks Dianne, Miguel, and pear! What a beautiful sight it was! Lol pear, that ditty keeps going through my head when I look at the pair and then turn around and see Mars. So many planets in view at once. Mercury is the faintest of dots if you pan up from the thing sticking up from the righthand thick piling in the middle. It's hardly even a fair test, as it takes me forever to find it. And just a week earlier it was so easily visible and fairly bright. (and Home is still only weekends....its getting really old. But I've now gotten to know little Trenton Mercer Airport!)

So Hg just flittered away

Thanks for the sincere comment Patano. But as I've mentioned to you before, posting links to your outside blog on other people's photos is against the Panoramio policies - see http://www.panoramio.com/help/spam_comments - and while I do appreciate your visit I really don't appreciate you advertizing your blog on my photos.

The Panoramio policies state:

We define your comment as spam if it meets these conditions:

In a comment, you link to your own photos or to an external website. You can add links to your own photos, but not to another persons photos

Thanks for understanding the policy and my feelings about respecting it. If you feel I'm being unfair, as you've complained before, take up your issue with the policy with Gerard, not me.

Hi Tery - I think it turned its back on us, and then zoomed off into the sunset. It sure became obvious the past 3 weeks why Mercury was the god of speed!

Snakes entwined on his staff protect Mercury, messenger of the Roman gods. With a little imagination, you can visualize the snakes entwined in Mercury’s symbol

Itallica on March 19, 2012

Heraclitus believed that Mercury and Venus orbit the Sun, not the Earth.

Norrel on March 19, 2012

Even without the planets this is a nice picture, Bits. I wouldn't have noticed any planets in this picture if you hadn't told me. If it's high up in the sky and it's emitting light, I call it a star. I should read more about the sky.

Scorched Earth Photo… on March 21, 2012

Great contrast and color ! Tried some evening sky shots once , but the stars turned out to be dust spots on the sensor .

Bits-n-Pieces on March 26, 2012

Yes, you should, Norrel! But feel free to click on my photos whenever you feel that you should be paying attention to the planets.

Thanks Waldo! But I'm surprised you don't really try for sky shots, especially night ones. You must have AMAZING stars in the sky there. A nice view of the Milky Way over your backyard Tree.

Scorched Earth Photo… on March 26, 2012

Gonna try for some night shots this summer Bits - up high in the mountains with no noise pollution - been to the spot and have seen more stars than the Hollywood walk of fame - just gotta get my arse in gear , and figure out the exposure !

motorhand on March 26, 2012

Unfortunately I had many clouds at their nearest position. Yesterday the moon also came very near to Jupiter. So I will try some shots next night, but I don't have such a wonderful lake, like this at your beautiful photo !

Thanks Liam!

And oooooops, apologies for being sooooo bad these days at finding time to thank people for their comments Waldo and motorhand - lack of time, and lousy weekday connections are my poor excuse ;) But Thanks!!!
