Este magnífico edificio se construyó a finales del siglo XV por iniciativa de Alonso de Burgos, obispo de la diócesis de Palencia y dominico confesor de los Reyes Católicos. La fachada, un retablo en piedra, incluye elementos figurativos complejos que parecen apelar a la educación y sus beneficios. Se cree ver en ella la mano de Gil de Siloé. Es una preciada muestra del estilo isabelino, en la que empiezan a apuntarse rasgos del Renacimiento. El cuerpo bajo presenta un arco carpanel que acoge la portada, que está flanqueada por esculturas de salvajes: se ha dicho que hacen el oficio de guardianes. En el segundo cuerpo se muestra esculpido el árbol de la vida, junto con varios escudos de Fray Alonso de Burgos. El escudo de los Reyes Católicos preside la fachada. La diferencia entre éste y el escudo del patio separa la fecha en que se esculpieron: una anterior, otra posterior a la toma de Granada.
