The city of Aegina

In 1826 Governor Ioannis Kapodistrias defines the capital of Greece Aegina. The headquarters of Aegina is located at the western end gradually extending eastward, covering the entire northern plains and mountains stretching to the south. The town center is developed around the port in the southwest end of which stands a bust of Kapodistrias as little tribute to the captain who gave new life to this historic site. The shopping area extends to the promenade, with many elegant dining centers, tourist accommodation and shops and outlets for local products. The market is expanding into the commercial streets of the city where stately 19th century architecture wins immediately interest the visitor.

In the 2001 census shows a population of 13,552 inhabitants, of whom 7,783 live in the city of Aegina and other settlements in Vathi, Kypseli, Mesagros and partridges.

The population distribution has 157 inhabitants per square kilometer. Apart from the commercial and naval tradition, the residents are known for their artistic activity in ceramics, but also for the rural cooperatives that operate successfully with a known peanut product Aegina. The quality of Aegina pistachios due to climatic conditions of the island (drought) and the volcanic soil characteristics.
