Yes, the wall is part of the roman wall built in the 1st century AD. This is part of the Balkerne Gate. The water tower is modern (1883). Colchester is the oldest recorded town in Britain and was once the capital of Roman Britain, Camulodunum, when London was just a trading post. The gate, only partly seen on the right is the largest surviving roman gateway in Britain. It was rebuilt by the Romans after being destroyed by Queen Boudica in AD 60.
