SPLIT: Sveti Duje, zvonik prvostolnice (13-16. st.) - St. Duje, cathedral bell tower (13th-16th C)

Pogled iz perivoja na Matejuški - A view from the Matejuška park

....................................................................................................

As the Split Cathedral just moved into the mausoleum of the Roman Emperor Diocletian, a few hundred years after

his death, its size generally remained sealed with the existing construction capacity. Monumental burial place of the

famous "Son of Jupiter" was adequate space for the Christian shrine of early medieval Split. **To compensate conditioned,

modest size of the cathedral and its undecorated exteriors, the citizens of Split have raised the contemporary six storey

skyscraper in honor of their patron saint.** Slim tower, with its prominent size and beauty was and still is far more than mere

compensation for the lack of external splendor of the Mother of all Croatian cathedrals. It was thoroughly repaired and

restored 1890-1908.
